“A good book can teach you about the world and about yourself. You learn more than how to read better; you also learn more about life. You become wiser. Not just more knowledgeable — books that provide nothing but information can produce that result. But wiser, in the sense that you are more deeply aware of the great and enduring truths of human life”

The quote tells us reading is an excellent tool to strengthen your mind, but why does the average American read only between 1–6 books a year, sometimes fewer?

A research study done by PEW research center will further explain. In this study, it was divided up by race, income, age, and how many books read. The one thing that stuck out to me, was how higher income people were reading more books. I will go into this a little more later!

When reading is key to gaining more knowledge and insight, why do so many people put little stress on reading books each year?

Hopefully, by the end of this I will be able to persuade a few to read more and have a sense for why reading can actually greatly help every area of your life you didn’t think it could.

I will be talking about which books may be good for you, the psychology of reading and how it’s good for the brain, and how you should read once a day to keep your brain sharp.

Psychology of reading and how it’s good for the brain:

  1. Reading makes you smarter
  2. Improved vocabulary
  3. Increased tranquility
  4. Improved memory
  5. Helps prioritize goals
  6. It can sharpen your brain
  7. Helps with loneliness
  8. Improved holistic thinking
  9. Faster word recall
  10. Reduces stress

Reading will save you time:

It looks like it’s wasting time, but literature is actually the ultimate time-saver, because it gives us access to a range of emotions and events that it would take you years or decades to try to experience directly. Literature is the greatest reality simulator, reading puts us through more situations than you can ever directly witness. What if you could travel into the future of knowledge that you could learn right now? You can! Go to amazon.com and buy some books! I have never had anything have such a profound impact on my life. Books can change you into the person you want to become.

“Consume more knowledge, become more knowledgable.”

Magic of Reading:

Literature performs the basic magic of what things look like though someone else’s point of view; it allows us to consider the consequences of our actions on others in ways we normally wouldn’t. Writers are sympathetic to ideas and feelings that are of deep importance, but aren’t very much commercialized, in our status-conscious world.

No matter which you type of book you pick, our brains will always be stronger when you feed it more and more information to formulate new information from. Also, I would read more books if it was going to possibly increase my income compared to people who don’t. There is a large array of benefits, even more than I listed here. Get reading, and the compound effect of reading will work in your advantage.

Reading is like other activities: the more effort you put forth and the more skill you possess, the better; but you’ll only grow in skill as you challenge yourself. This means that you and I must read things that demand something of us. Portions of the book must be difficult to understand, or perhaps difficult to apply. But when we engage such books, the mind passes from understanding less to understanding more. And acquiring a deeper understanding about ourselves and the world we live in and applying it to life is the key to building a better you.
